Ball valves are a member of the quarter-turn valve family. They offer reliable sealing and are ideal for gas applications requiring tight shutoff. A ball valve has a spherical closure unit that provides on/off control of flow. This sphere has a port, or bore, through its centre and when the bore is aligned in the same direction as the pipeline, it is in the open position and allows fluid to flow through it. Rotated 90 degrees, the bore is perpendicular to the flow path, therefore closing the valve and preventing fluid to pass through.
